CLAREMONT, CA – With Saturday's 6-3 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday afternoon, the women's tennis program was sent to the record books.
The victory completes the Beavers season with an 11-10 overall record which is the most wins for the program since the 2000 season. Furthermore, it is the first time since the 1997 season that the program has finished with a better than .500 record.
Strong doubles play put Caltech in a good spot heading into the singles matches. Rebekah Kitto and Monica Li teamed up for an 8-4 win at the top spot. The duo of Sophia Chen and Valerie Pietrasz won a critical match at the third position. Chen and Pietrasz pulled out a tightly contested match 8-6.
In her final match in a Beaver uniform, Kitto recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles position. The senior graduates with 53 career wins which is 11 more than Alexis Johnson's second place number.
Jenny Sheng grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win at the third singles spot for her 16th win of the season. The first-years win total is the second best single season total in school history.
Cal Lutheran stayed in match with wins at the No. 2 and No. 4 singles but it wasn't nearly enough as Caltech was up to their challenge. Sophia Chen wrapped-up her first year with the program with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the fifth singles slot.
Michelle Tang capped off the Beavers team win with a three-set win at the No. 6 position as she ends her Caltech tenure with a victory.
Dating back to last year, it is the third straight win for Caltech against the Regals.
