LOS ANGELES (Feb. 12, 2017) – Sophomore Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) and the Caltech women's tennis team won every singles match and handled host Occidental College, 8-1, in Sunday's SCIAC battle.
Reisler, the team's top-ranked singles player may have been the last of the Beavers' six singles players to finish but that did not stop her from pulling out a resilient, 6-4, 6-4, victory in the top singles slot. Additionally, Caltech's freshman dominance went on full display once again when fourth-singles player Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) won the clinching match, 6-0, 6-1, and fellow freshman Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) had the quickest finish out of all the Caltech singles players. She also won her match, 6-0, 6-1.
The duo teamed up prior to their singles victories in the second-doubles slot, which proved to be a much closer call. Bodrova and Zhou went on to win 9-7 while the team of Reisler and Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) had a much quicker go of it, winning their match, 8-2. Moriyama, the team's second-singles player, came out victorious in her later match, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win just prior to Bodrova's match-clinching victory.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will resume play at home in Friday's Orange Out match against California Lutheran University. Cal Lutheran, the 40th-ranked team in the nation, was previously ranked just one spot ahead of the Beavers in the SCIAC's preseason poll.
