PASADENA (Mar. 22, 2017) – Freshman Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) had the lone victory of the day for No. 38 Caltech women's tennis team against No. 14 Sewanee: University of the South on Wednesday.
Slotting in at #3 singles, Zhou pulled out a narrow straight-set win over Christina Merchant 7-5, 7-6 (5). Fellow freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) pushed her opponent to three sets and nearly scored a second victory for Caltech at #4 singles (4-6, 7-6, 10-3). Sophomore Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) took a close first-set loss at #2 in a tiebreaker before going down 6-3 in the second set while senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) gave her opponent at #6 another tight battle, 6-4, 6-3.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the 5-5 Beavers will have a quick turnaround when they take on Principia College (1-8) out of Illinois this Thursday, Mar. 23 at 11 a.m.
