REDLANDS, Calif. (Apr. 15, 2017) – Sophomore Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) won both her matches for two of the No. 40 Caltech women's tennis team's three points at No. 33 University of Redlands on Saturday.
Reisler completed a 4-0 weekend in SCIAC play with a 6-4, 6-3 win at #3 singles and teamed with rookie Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) for the second time this spring to record an 8-6 win at #2 doubles. Freshman Alexandra Bodrova (Russia / Kurchatovskaya School) claimed the Beavers' only other point at #4 singles in a narrow 6-4, 6-4 win, although Caltech was not far from stealing the match despite the 6-3 final score.
Bodrova and senior Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) were just a late break from having a chance to give Caltech a 2-1 lead after doubles, falling 9-7 at #3 after Redlands had picked up the first point of the match at the top spot. The Bulldogs quickly clinched the match with decisive victories at #1, #5 and #6 singles, but Zhou gave UR's Emily Murnin all she could handle in her second match since moving up to court #2. The rookie took the first set 6-1, but was broken in the second (6-3) to lead to a superbreaker. Zhou ultimately fell 10-8, leaving a bitter taste in the Beavers' mouths ahead of a potential third-place rematch in the final round of the SCIAC Championships in three weeks.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers (8-7 overall, 3-3 SCIAC) conclude the first round of SCIAC play on Saturday, Apr. 22 at Whittier College (1-13, 1-5).
