PASADENA (Mar. 4, 2018) – Senior Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) and junior Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) teamed together in doubles and picked up singles wins for the 40th-ranked Caltech women's tennis against visiting No. 26 Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon.
Reisler got the Beavers' first victory of the day with a routine victory at second singles. The junior defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-4, and managed to be the third pairing off the court once singles play kicked in. Wang, meanwhile finished up her match shortly after, winning in similar 6-2, 6-4 fashion at fourth singles. Freshman Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) slotted in at third singles and came extremely close to notching a third point for the Beavers in the longest singles match of the day. Liu took the first set with a dominant 6-1 showing before her opponent battled back to win the second set before edging the freshman, 10-8, in a match-deciding supertiebreaker. Junior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) led Caltech at first singles and took four games off the No. 49 player in the country in the opening set.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the court on Friday, Mar. 9 against visiting No. 15 Mary Washington University.
