REDLANDS, Calif. (Apr. 7, 2018) – Senior Sarah Cai (Livermore, Calif. / West Lafayette Jr./Sr.) got the start at sixth singles on Saturday when she pulled out a marathon victory at sixth singles for Caltech women's tennis against visiting No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges.
Cai took a close first set against the Sagehens' sixth singles player, 7-5 but needed to reset in the match-deciding supertiebreaker after coming up short in the second set. Trailing 9-5 in the superbreaker, Cai fought off four match points then proceeded to trade match points with her opponent. Following a series of long rallies, Cai eventually capitalized on her second match point and put her opponent away for her third victory of the season, taking the superbreaker, 14-12. Caltech also came a few breaks away from another victory at second doubles, when junior Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) and sophomore Angelica Zhou (Temple City, Calif. / Arcadia) took seven games against the Sagehens at second doubles, with one of their opponents being one half of the top doubles team in the region.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return for their final home match on Saturday, Apr. 14 for their Orange Out and Senior Day against Occidental College.
