Moriyama, Reisler to Meet in Ojai Quarterfinals After Big Opening Day

VENTURA, Calif. (Apr. 26, 2018) – Juniors Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) and Julia Reisler (Plano, Texas / Greenhill) of the Caltech women's tennis team each won their first two matches at the 118th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament and will now meet in tomorrow's quarterfinal match, guaranteeing the Beavers at the very least an appearance in the semifinals of this year's women's singles tournament.

Reisler picked up perhaps the single most important win of the day for Caltech when she knocked off second-seeded Samantha Farrell of Occidental College in a three-set thriller in the second round of action. The junior cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the first round before running into a second-round showdown with Oxy's top player. Reisler turned the tables on her opponent with a 6-2 second set before coming out on top in an even more decisive third set, 6-1. Moriyama entered Thursday's draw as the fifth-seeded player and quickly made her presence felt with a 6-1, 6-0 win before turning around with another standout showing in the subsequent round (6-2, 6-3). Freshman Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) also picked up a first-round win (6-2, 6-0) before running into a wall in the form of the tournament's top-seeded player in the second round. Senior Erin Wang (Auburn, Calif. / Del Oro) also competed in the singles draw and will return to action tomorrow in the consolation round.

The top-ranked pair of singles players in the program, Moriyama and Reisler will meet in ITA competition for the first time on Friday, though the two have combined for eight doubles wins over their past three years on the team. Both players have eight singles wins to their name this season, though Moriyama holds the distinction of being the West region's 19th-ranked singles player.

The Moriyama-Reisler showdown will take place at 8 a.m. tomorrow in Ventura and will be followed by Moriyama and Liu, the second seeed in the women's doubles draw tasting their first bit of action in addition to the beginning of the men's tournament.
