Moriyama Nets Ranked Singles Win for No. 21 Women's Tennis

PASADENA (Mar. 14, 2019) – Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) of the Caltech women's tennis team added a key ranked singles win to her resume when Caltech hosted No. 12 Bowdoin College on Thursday afternoon.

Moriyama's win came at the top singles spot, where she rallied to defeat Bowdoin's 45th-ranked top player. Moriyama came up short in a close first set, 5-7, but roared back with a 6-2 second set and capitalized on the added momentum to win the super tiebreaker, 10-4. Freshmen Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) also took their opponents to three sets and second and fourth singles respectively. Yu's defeat is her first of the regular season and brings an end to a remarkable 7-0 start to her Caltech career.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will have their bye week and a few extra days to rest up and get ready to face No. 40 Colby College on Monday, Mar. 25 at 2 p.m.
