PASADENA (Apr. 6, 2019) – The 20th-ranked Caltech women's tennis team got the win at Occidental College over the weekend without dropping a single set to the Tigers.
Freshman Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy) and sophomore Sarina Liu (Rolling Hills, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) led the way with 6-0, 6-0 wins at second and fourth singles respectively. Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond), 15th in the region, took down Oxy's top singles player, 6-1, 6-1, and rookie Jennifer Yu (Queens, N.Y. / Stuyvesant), Caltech's winningest player in 2019 got the victory at third singles by the same score. Sophomore Ankita Roychoudhury (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand) had the toughest challenge at fifth singles but came away with Caltech's final victory of the day, 6-4, 6-0. As for doubles action, the Beavers won both matches by a combined score of 16-2 for two of their most dominant doubles performances of the season.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will have two more matches to improve their 3-2 SCIAC record, beginning with Chapman University on Saturday, Apr. 13 for Senior Day as they look to avenge last year's defeat.
