LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (Apr. 29, 2019) – Senior Kana Moriyama (Redmond, Wash. / Redmond) of the Caltech women's tennis team, after presumably winning SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the final time became the first back-to-back SCIAC award winner in the history of Caltech athletics.
Moriyama earned the achievement after winning the Division III women's singles championship at The 119th Ojai Valley Tournament on Sunday morning, becoming the first Caltech tennis player to win a championship at The Ojai. The tournament's third-seeded singles player advanced through the draw this week playing some the best tennis of her career and capped off her historic run with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the tournament's top-seeded player. Moriyama also factored into the women's doubles final alongside freshman partner Anna Tifrea (Fullerton, Calif. / Troy). The duo, playing together for the first time all season, won three matches before coming up short in Sunday's doubles final.
Moriyama and the Beavers will take time to celebrate the achievement before going back to work to prepare for second-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament this week. The Beavers took two points from the Sagehens in their previous meeting back in February.
