VOLLEYBALLCaltech Volleyball 2007 Season Wrap-upNov 3, 2007
![]() The Caltech women's volleyball program just finished the 2007 season with the annual alumni match on November 3. Ten alumni (some traveling by plane to attend) took the court to test their mettle against the current undergraduate Division III SCIAC team. The alums put up a good fight, but the current team took the match in three straight games. As is always the case, Caltech was the underdog in most matches this season. Recruiting is new (and hopefully an up and coming thing) at Caltech and very difficult to do given the stringent admission criteria. Never the less, we always get a group of dedicated and motivated female athletes that want to come out and be the first to take a conference win (which hasn't been done just yet). What these ladies sometimes lack in experience, is made up for in heart and work ethic. This season, the team managed the first win in four years, the first win over a NCAA Division III team, and three total match wins! This season's volleyball team was lead by team co-captain and 5-1 setter, Sarah Stidham. Her accurate setting, consistent tough serving, and digging efforts let the rest of her team shine. The core of this season's starting line-up working with Stidham was made up of a young and exciting group of female athletes. Three freshmen earned starting spots. Kati Peters came with a solid four years of high school experience, and not only provided the team with great skill, but was also a natural leader and motivator on the court. She played outside hitter, was a primary passer, made the SCIAC boards in service aces, and had one of the highest number of digs on the team. Felow frosh, Sarah Griffis and Ying-Ying Tran, contributed as middle hitter and libero, respectively. Sophmore, Lisa Yee, played outside opposite Peters and lead the team in kills. She, Peters and Tran passed a three person serve receive with the confidence of much older players. Tencia Lee, a shorter player with an amazing jump, found herself thrown into becoming a middle blocker. Marie Giron played right side, providing a big block and a strong attack from the right side. Carolyn Valdez played right back, providing steady defense and strong and consistent serving. Even though we graduate three seniors, we have thirteen players returning and the future looks bright! This team is out for that first conference win and plans to make it happen in 2008. |
