Pasadena, Calif. (Sept. 13, 2016) – Freshman Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) double-doubled again despite the Caltech volleyball team dropping its home opener to Providence Christian College, 3-0, on Tuesday night.

Lauinger registered 12 digs and 10 kills on a .179 hitting percentage while classmate Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) recorded a match-high 17 digs and rookie Ellie Walker (Minneapolis, Minn. / Blake School) set for 18 assists.

The Beavers held an initial 4-1 lead in the first set before the Sea Beggars came storming back to tie it at 4-4. The foes traded points through the rest of the game until set was back and forth and the Beavers were able to keep it close the rest of the game until PCC separated with a 7-1 run.  Caltech staged a late rally, coming back from trailing 20-13 to pull within three at 23-20, before succumbing.

The hosts started the second set strong, holding a lead in the early stages before PCC tied things up at 9-9. The Beavers kept the set close, staying within striking distance the Sea Beggers again pulled away with a 6-1 run to win the set 25-17.

The third set was initially close as well, but PCC raced ahead to a 17-10 lead and did not surrender consecutive points after trailing 5-6, finally wrapping up the match with an ace.

Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers travel to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (4-4) this Saturday, Sept. 17 for their first SCIAC match of the season at 4 p.m. against the Sagehens.
