MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (Sept. 7, 2018) – The Caltech volleyball team played two long, competitive matches to open the MSOE Invitational, hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Alverno 3, Caltech 2
The Beavers began their day against Alverno College, rallying to win sets three and four after coming up just two points shy in each of the first two sets. Junior outside hitter Lauren Li (Bellaire, Texas / Bellaire) led Caltech with 12 kills, including four in the fourth set with the final two occurring on her team's last two points to force the fifth set. Li also hit double-digit digs with 11, as did freshman libero Megan Wang (Henderson, Nev. / Advanced Technologies Academy), who led the Beavers with 24 digs. Classmate Alexandra Frymire (Dallas, Texas / Greenhill) contributed a balanced five kills, 15 assists, and 12 digs while junior Ellie Walker (Minneapolis, Minn. / Blake School) had the high-assist total for Caltech with 17. The Beavers won the third and fourth sets 25-21, and led Alverno as late into the fifth set as 11-10.

Caltech took a 2-1 advantage in the second match of the day against invitational-host MSOE. Li hit double-digit kills for the second time of the day (12) and freshman middle blocker Alison Noyes (Falmouth, Maine / Falmouth) led the Beavers with 13 kills for the first time in her career. Noyes also finished the match with two service aces and one solo block. Junior Helena Shield (Mercer Island, Wash. / Mercer Island) made her season debut and picked up nine kills over the full five-set match. Frymire and Walker once again paced the Beavers in assists with 28 and 18 respectively and Frymire also added eight kills and seven digs. Caltech enjoyed a collaborative effort defensively with four different players registering at least 10 digs. The Beavers pushed the tournament host to 9-9 in the decisive set but their five-point victory in the third set marked the largest margin of victory on the day in any set.
Head Coach Tom Gardner and the Beavers will finish up at MSOE against Benedictine University and the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Saturday, Sept. 8.
