Introducing... Caltech Volleyball Class of 2023

PASADENA (June 6, 2019) – Head Coach Tom Gardner has revealed the Caltech volleyball's Class of 2023, consisting of a pair of talented freshmen.

Charley LaFayette (Toronto, Ontario, Can. / Branksome Hall)
Dallas Taylor (Phoenix, Ariz. / Saguaro H.S.)

"This is a small class in number but big in talent," Head Coach Tom Gardner said. "In Charley and Dallas, we fill a variety of needs and enhance our team offensively and defensively. These two competitors will increase the level of play on our practice court and contribute to greater success in our match play."

Lafayette has a great deal of playing experience, with her teams winning two bronze medals, a silver and, most recently, a gold at the Canadian National Championships. She was also named the team's MVP in the 2018 campaign. She took part in the Stanford University summer programs, was the Head Organizer of Regional STEM conferences and an Artificial Intelligence Panel Discussion and competed in Mathematics competitions.

"Charley is an outstanding middle blocker who is quick and dynamic," Gardner said. "She will really speed up our offense and solidify our block on defense. I am excited to see the positive impact that she has on her teammates."

Taylor has four seasons of club and high school playing experience, over which she has been awarded Fox Sports Student Athlete of the Month, First Team All-District, Second Team All-State, Varsity MVP, Varsity Captain (twice) and Offensive Player of the Year. She was elected as the President of Health Occupation Students of America (Pharmacy), and attended the National Congress of Future Medical Scientists, University of Arizona Future Health Leaders, as well as acquiring her Pharmacy Technician certification.

"Dallas is an excellent player who has the ability to play all three attacking positions," Gardner said. "Her size and experience will make us a stronger team. She is a fierce competitor and has a determination to be successful."

The 2018 campaign was best statistical year ever for the Beavers, breaking team records for kills, digs and assists and while setting new individual bests in kills and digs. The 2018 team accomplished this while missing two key players in Krystyna Maruszko and Alexa Lauinger, both of which are expected to rejoin the team this season.

"The 2019 team will be our most talented to date," Gardner said. "Our returners are stronger and better conditioned and they are hungry to again re-write the record books with success. I am excited to welcome our two new players and I expect them to mesh seamlessly with their new teammates."
