LONG BEACH, Calif. (Mar. 14, 2015) – Junior Soumya Kannan (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry M Gunn) bagged a brace and hat trick in a pair of games as the Caltech women's water polo team took on Division I foes Long Beach State and Marist College on Saturday. Kannan has now scored in all seven games to open the season.
Caltech 3, Long Beach State 18
The 49ers scored the opening goal on their first possession and led 7-1 after the first quarter, with Kannan notching the Beavers' first. Caltech kept it closer in the second quarter, netting twice as Kannan and senior Shalini Majumdar (Orinda, Calif. / Miramonte) scored once apiece while Long Beach State tallied six to lead 13-3 at halftime. Sophomore Sasha Zemsky (Mount Kisco, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) made a pair of saves against the 49ers, who would net just one goal in the third quarter before a final four-goal outburst in the fourth.
Caltech 4, Marist 24
Marist jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first quarter, but again Caltech bounced back in the second, scoring three goals to the Red Foxes' six. Kannan struck first for Caltech, scoring twice, followed by Majumdar, who scored on an extraman opportunity. Kannan would complete the hat trick in the fourth quarter while Zemsky and junior Stephanie Wong (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) combined to make three saves in goal.
Head Coach Pat Beemer and the Beavers will host Macalester College and Virginia Military Institute in a tri-match tomorrow, Sunday, Mar. 15. The visitors will face off against each other at 10:30 a.m., followed by Caltech-Macalester at 1:00 p.m. and Caltech-VMI at 3:30 p.m.
