PASADENA (Mar. 7, 2017) – Sophomores Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) and Brittany Percin (Lake Tahoe, Calif. / Stanford Online) each scored six goals for Caltech women's water polo as the Beavers fell, 21-14, to Penn State-Behrend on Tuesday evening.
Caltech got on the board first with a goal from Johnston, but the visitors quickly countered and evened the score. Percin scored next for the Beavers on a rocket from directly in front of the goal. Johnston and Percin each struck again in the quarter to give Caltech a 5-3 first quarter lead. The Lions would give up another two goals to Johnston at the beginning of the second quarter before scoring two of their own to keep the game close. Percin added two more for the Beavers as they took a 9-8 lead into halftime.
PSB opened the second half with a goal to tie the game, but senior Sasha Zemsky (Mount Kisco, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) responded for the Beavers with her lone goal of the game and Devi Ganapathi (La Crescenta, Calif. / Crescenta Valley) nailed a floater to the top right side of the cage to give Caltech a two-score lead again. The Lions came roaring back as they scored the next five goals of the contest before Percin scored halfway through the final frame. PSB scored three more times to take a four-goal lead late into the fourth. Caltech's attempted comeback, led by goals from Johnston and Percin, fell short in the end.
Senior Mary Boyajian (Sun Valley, Calif. / Village Christian) finished with eight assists and two steals and sophomore Gemma Takahashi (San Jose, Calif. / Leland) also had two steals. Freshman Sarah Kreider (River Forest, Ill. / Oak Park and River Forest) made nine saves in net.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will open up SCIAC play tomorrow night when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for a 4 p.m. game.
