EAGLE ROCK, Calif. (Apr. 4, 2018) – The Caltech women's water polo team set a number of season-best totals at Occidental College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Beavers hung seven goals on the Tigers over the 32-minute game, a program best in 2018 SCIAC competition and outshot the home team, 31-24, the first time the Beavers have outshot anyone this year. Junior Brittany Percin (Lake Tahoe, Calif. / Stanford Online) played a large role in the Beavers' shooting picture, firing 13 shots and scoring two goals while drawing three exclusions and factoring in on defense with four steals. Caltech also completed a higher extraman percentage than its neighboring opponent.
Besides Percin, two other Beavers added a pair of goals. Sophomore Mackenzie Wooten (Las Vegas, Nev. / Northwest Career and Technical Academy) and junior Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) each netted two goals, while Johnston led the Beavers with four points thanks to an additional two assists. The junior also had two steals and two drawn exclusions as another two-way factor for the visitors. Sophomore Gabriella Chan (Colleyville, Texas / School for the Talented and Gifted) also found the back of the net.
Thursday's game is also the closest the Beavers have come on paper to achieving their first SCIAC win under Head Coach Jon Bonafede, perhaps a sign of things to come down the line.
Bonafede and the Beavers will return home on Saturday, Apr. 7 for the team's penultimate home game of the season against the University of Redlands at 11 a.m.
