CLAREMONT, Calif. (Mar. 1, 2019) – The Caltech women's water polo team rebounded from its home opener against California Lutheran University by scoring nine goals in the opening game of this weekend's Gary Troyer Tournament against Grove City College.
Game 1: Grove City 21, Caltech 9
Caltech found its footing offensively and got more comfortable in its rhythm as the game progressed senior Katie Johnston (Livermore, Calif. / Livermore) keyed the Caltech offense with a four-goal, three-assist game and led the way defensively as well with nine steals. The senior also drew four exclusions. Johnston showcased her especially good chemistry with classmate Hana Keller (Sammamish, Wash. / Tesla STEM), who led the Beavers with four assists. Freshman Sophie Devoe (La Jolla, Calif. / Bishop's), who scored the team's first goal of the season this past Wednesday, also contributed with two goals and two assists while coming out victorious on a pair of sprints. Senior Michelle Zhao (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Gabriella Chan (Colleyville, Texas / School for the Talented and Gifted) also entered the scorebook with their first goals of 2019 (the first of Zhao's career).
Game 2: Villanova 21, Caltech 3
The Beavers endured their toughest test of the season against a Division I opponent in Friday's late game. Caltech did, however, manage to notch a goal in the first quarter of a game for the first time through this season's first three contests. Johnston converted on the goals after drawing a five-meter penalty foul to cut the early-game deficit to two scores. The senior ended up scoring all three of Caltech's goals, giving her eight through the first three games of 2019.
Head Coach Jon Bonafede and the Beavers will return to action on Saturday when they take on California State Univesity, Monterrey Bay at 9 a.m.
