LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (May 23, 2017) – Caltech seniors Sophia Chen (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and J.D. Feist (Richardson, Texas / Jesuit Coll. Prep) have been named SCIAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
Chen was a regular starter in both singles and doubles for the women's tennis team which earned its first national ranking (No. 38) in program history this past year. A three-year captain, she has compiled a stellar 3.9 GPA as an electrical engineering option.
Feist ended the 2016 season as the active saves leader across all three NCAA divisions, ranking 15th in DIII history with 559 over his 69 career games. He stopped a career-high 179 shots – more than twice the second-ranked player in the conference – for a .691 save percentage to earn both First Team All-SCIAC honors and the Brine Award of Distinction. He too has posted a 3.9 GPA while pursuing a chemistry option with a geology & planetary sciences minor.
