PASADENA, CA – Whittier scored in all but one inning as they posted a 14-2 win over Caltech in the SCIAC opener for both teams.
The Poets started their scoring by crossing the plate three times in the first inning. Caltech responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning when Derek Kearney ripped a double that scored Albie Lavin.
Whittier proceeded to score a run in the second then a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings respectively. After four innings the Poets held an 8-1 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning the Poets added to their lead with a run in the sixth inning. Caltech's final run of the afternoon came when Lavin hit a sacrifice fly that drove in Thomas Kwok in the bottom half of the inning.
Already up 9-2, the Poets tacked on another run in the seventh inning then plated four more runs in eighth inning.
Graham Pimm led the potent Whittier offense by going 3-for-5 with four runs scored while driving in another. Stephen Zavala and Cody Martinez each recorded two hit afternoon's.
Nick Garcia went the distance on the mound as he surrendered three hits and struck out five.
Tim Menninger, Kearney and Kwok each recorded a hit for the Beavers.
The two teams square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader at Whittier beginning at 11 a.m.
