PASADENA (Mar. 24, 2018) – Junior catcher Mark Burleson (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Tesoro) added to his team-leading stolen base total when the Caltech baseball team took on the University of Redlands in this weekend's three-game series.
Burleson's 11 steals have him positioned fifth in the SCIAC and are currently halfway to the Caltech single-season record. The stolen base came in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader in a two-out situation after he drew a walk.
Friday: Redlands 11, Caltech 0
Caltech's lone extra-base knock came from senior first baseman David Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor) in the second inning when he doubled down the left field line, advancing junior Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) to third and thus putting two runners in scoring position. It took an athletic play from the visiting Bulldogs' pitcher to quell the Beavers' most ambitious offensive effort of the game.
Saturday Game 1: Redlands 10, Caltech 0
Senior shortstop Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, Ill. / North Shore Country Day) put his excellent eye to use by drawing three walks against the Bulldogs' statistically best pitcher. Sophomore Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School) occupied the Beavers' designated hitter spot and responded with two hits, both of which went for singles. Sophomore David Adams (Atlanta, Ga. / Holy Innocents' Episcopal School), meanwhile made his pitching debut for Caltech, giving the Beavers one and two-thirds innings in relief.
Saturday Game 2: Redlands 10, Caltech 0
The Beavers picked up a hit from senior third baseman Garrett Levine (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) in the fourth inning on a single through the left side. Additionally, freshman Dillon Holder (New York, NY / Horace Mann) returned to the mound to make his first start since one month to the day.
Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will be back in action on Tuesday, Mar. 27 when they host Middlebury College at 3:30 p.m.
