Baseball Hangs with Whittier on Senior Day

PASADENA (Apr. 14, 2018) – The Caltech baseball team honored its three senior members prior to taking the field against visiting Whittier College on Saturday. First baseman David Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor), shortstop Chris McCarren (Kenilworth, Ill. / North Shore Country Day) and two-way player Garrett Levine (Columbus, Ohio / Columbus Academy) were recognized for their efforts and contributions to the program over the last four years.

Friday: Whittier 15, Caltech 4

Caltech found the scoreboard early in a game in which they hung with Whittier for the majority of the contest. Garrett Levine got the start for Caltech and scattered the Poets over five innings of work in which he notched three strikeouts. The Beavers' first scoring plays of the game came courtesy of Chris McCarren, who first singled into right field and advanced to third base on an error that allowed freshman outfielder Alex Corado (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) to score from first base. In his next at-bat, McCarren scored junior catcher Mark Burleson (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Tesoro) on a groundout to short. Burleson added his 12th steal of the season in this game and freshman Mitchell Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor)grabbed an RBI for himself with a two-hit day at the plate.

Saturday Game 1: Whittier 1, Caltech 0

Junior starting pitcher Jonah Krop (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) pitched one of the best games of his Caltech career and gave the Beavers nine strong innings of one-run ball. The Poets' lone run of the game came unearned and Krop struck out five Whittier players while averaging less than one baserunner per inning for his fifth complete game of the season. The outing also lowered his ERA to 5.27 on the year, which would be a career-best if the season ended today. His K's per nine is also up by nearly two strikeouts per inning from last year, as the junior is slated to surpass his innings total from last year with his next start.

The Caltech offense outhit the Poets with six hits to five and even loaded the bases in the third inning after drawing three consecutive walks from the visiting pitcher. David Watson led the home team with two walks in four plate appearances and sophomore second baseman Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School) helped Krop's cause in the top of the third inning with a web-gem of the year candidate that will undoubtedly have its place in this year's highlight video.

Saturday Game 2: Whittier 15, Caltech 3

The Caltech bats finally got going in support of starter Cortland Perry in the fourth inning of Saturday's second game. Garrett Levine got things started with a double down the left field line before junior Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) tripled into right center with a hard-contact shot to score Levine. Mark Burleson utilized his improved speed on the very next player with an infield single to third base to bring Moffatt home. Burleson added to his stolen base count with his 13th and 14th of the season, good for fourth in the conference.

Head Coach Matthew Mark and the Beavers will play their final home game of 2018 on Friday, Apr. 20 against visiting defending national champion California Lutheran University.
