CLAREMONT, Calif. (Apr. 27, 2019) – The Caltech baseball team pushed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges over two of the three games in this weekend's series, and the Beavers added some highlights to their historic 2018-19 season along the way.
Friday: CMS 8, Caltech 3
Sophomore first baseman Mitchell Watson (Windsor, Colo. / Windsor) had the big offensive day for Caltech, swatting his second home run of the season in a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Watson's home run came in the eighth inning, a solo shot into deep center field that cut the deficit to four runs heading into the final inning of the game. Watson delivered another quality at-bat in the sixth inning when he tripled into center field, scoring juniors Alex Corado (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) and Cortland Perry (New York, N.Y. / The Dalton School).
Senior left-handed pitcher Jonah Krop (Santa Monica, Calif. / Santa Monica) drew the start for Caltech and struck out eights Stags in six innings of work. Freshman Pierce Governale (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Preparatory School) pitched out the final three innings of the game and whiffed two members of the visiting team over that span. Caltech remained competitive with CMS thanks to seven team hits, though the Beavers' defense and pitching nearly brought home the first Saturday game in Claremont.
Saturday Game 1: CMS 2, Caltech 1
Freshman Dawson Beutler (Omaha, Neb. / Millard West) started for Caltech and delivered a superb display through nearly five innings of work before classmate Max Popken (Westport, Conn. / Staples) took over for the final 10 outs of the game.
After trailing the host Stags for the majority of the game, Caltech got back on the board with an attempt at a late rally in the top ninth. Senior Connor Moffatt (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) kicked off the rally with one out on the board thanks to a single into left field. The infielder went on to steal his first base of the season before freshman infielder Ryan Ruscansky (Annandale, N.J. / North Hunterdon) knocked him in to cut the CMS lead in half. While the Beavers ultimately fell short of a successful comeback, the successfully matched the first game of the series with seven hits as a team in a game that took on more of pitching-centric tone.
Saturday Game 2: CMS 15, Caltech 1
Five different players pitched for the Beavers in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Offensively, the Beavers' best moments came in the fourth inning. Corado led the inning off with a double to left center field, and senior Mark Burleson (Ladera Ranch, Calif. / Tesoro) stepped in later in the inning to deliver an RBI triple into left field.
Head Coach Kevin Whitehead and the Beavers will finish up the 2019 season in a three-game series with first-place Chapman University beginning on Friday, May 3 in Orange.
