REDLANDS, Calif. – In the consolation round of the 63rd annual Fulmer Tournament at the University of Redlands, Southwestern knocked off Caltech 77-58 on Friday afternoon.
On Saturday afternoon Caltech (0-5) will face American Sports University at 1:30 p.m. who lost to West Coast Baptist 77-61 earlier in the day. The eight-team, three-day event concludes on Saturday.
Caltech had a rough shooting afternoon as they converted 31 percent of their field goal attempts. The Beavers tied a season high by hoisting up 64 shots but converted only 20 of those attempts.
Southwestern (2-4) jumped out to a fast start in the opening half. The Eagles scored 16 of the game's first 23 points as the Beavers were forced into an early timeout. Southwestern continued to build on their advantage and eventually took a 21-point (45-24) lead into the locker room.
During the second 20 minutes of action the Eagles were able to keep their cushion. Caltech got as close as 15 points on two occasions but couldn't get their deficit into single digits.
Todd Cramer notched the first double-double of the season for the Beavers as he tallied a 15-point, 14-rebound game in 30 minutes of action.
Caltech turned the ball over a season low 11 times in the contest. In addition, the Beavers recorded 13 assists as a team to post a positive assist-to-turnover ratio for the first time on the young season.
