PASADENA, Calif. – Caltech men's basketball player Ryan Elmquist was named the SCIAC's male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Dec. 10.
The senior tri-captain helped the Beavers break a 44-game losing streak last weekend at the Lee Fulmer Tournament hosted by the University of the Redlands. Caltech knocked off American Sports University 74-67 to end the skid.
"Ryan is very deserving of this honor. He has really worked diligently to become a complete basketball player and this past week's performance is proof," third-year head coach Oliver Eslinger said.
During the three-day, eight-team event he earned the Sportsmanship Award for his performances. He averaged a team best 17.3 points per game while playing 33.3 minutes per game. He also tallied 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocks a game.
The native of Woodbury, Minn., is two points away from becoming the 11th player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He is two blocks away from breaking Ben Turk's school record of 126 career blocks. In addition he has started 45 consecutive games for the Beavers.
It is the first time Elmquist has earned the conference's weekly honor.
