PASADENA, Calif. - Head coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger has announced the 2010-11 Caltech men's basketball schedule, which features a bevy of tournaments and opponents from across the nation. The Beavers will host 11 contests at the Braun Athletic Center in Pasadena while 14 will be on the road, tying the 2002-03 campaign for the most number of away games in more than eight years.
In the program's first out-of-state trip since the 2005-06 season, the Beavers will head to Wisconsin to participate in the Milwaukee School of Engineering Tip-Off Tournament Nov. 20 and 21. MSOE also welcomes Carnegie Mellon (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, N.Y.) to the bi-annual event.
Caltech tips off its home slate with a Thanksgiving weekend game against NAIA Hope International on Nov. 27. The sole time the teams met came during the 1999-2000 season.
The Beavers then hit the road for a three-day extravaganza at Redlands Dec. 2-4. The annual Fulmer Tournament features a competitive eight-team field with three SCIAC schools (Caltech, Redlands, Whittier) and two division 3 independents in NCAA qualifier Chapman University (Orange, Calif.) and northern California foe UC Santa Cruz. Lewis and Clark (Portland, Ore.) from the Northwest Conference, West Coast Baptist (Lancaster, Calif.), and Southwestern (Ariz.) round out the competition.
Eastern Nazarene (Quincy, Mass.) travels to Pasadena on Dec. 13 for a winter break matchup – the first ever meeting between the schools – prior to the annual SCIAC Classic co-hosted by Caltech and Cal Lutheran Dec. 18 and 19. The weekend competition includes UC Santa Cruz and Pacific Lutheran (Tacoma, Wash.) from the Northwest Conference with games to be played at Caltech on Saturday and at Cal Lu on Sunday.
A brand new year will see Eastern Connecticut State (Willimantic / Little East Conference) and Wisconsin Lutheran (Milwaukee / NATHC) come to Southern California for the perennial Holiday Classic co-hosted by Caltech and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Jan. 2 and 3. Sunday's games take place in Pasadena while the Monday slate is in Claremont.
The conference ledger opens with home games against Pomona-Pitzer on Jan. 8 and Redlands on Jan. 12. Caltech travels to La Verne Jan. 15 before returning to the Braun Athletic Center for contests versus Cal Lu (Jan. 19) and Claremont-M-S (Jan. 22).
The Beavers play four of the next five games on the road. Away contests at Occidental (Jan. 26), Whittier (Jan. 29), Redlands (Feb. 5), and Pomona-Pitzer (Feb. 9) sandwich a home event versus La Verne on Feb. 2.
On Feb. 12, Caltech returns to Braun and will take on Whittier during the Beavers' annual Men's Basketball Alumni Event. Former players in attendance will square off with one another in a daytime alumni game before cheering on Caltech that evening.
The team makes stops at Cal Lutheran (Feb. 16) and Claremont-M-S (Feb. 19) for the final two road games before coming back home for Senior Night and the last regular season opponent, Occidental College, on Feb. 22.
