Early Deficit Dooms Caltech as Occidental Records Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Occidental men's basketball team used a quick start in posting a 81-55 win over Caltech on Wednesday evening in a SCIAC contest.

In the opening half Occidental (7-6, 2-0) jumped out to a 16-2 lead less than six minutes into the game. The home squad eventually grew their advantage to as large as 18 points at 32-14 with 6:42 remaining in the frame. Caltech (5-8, 0-2) mounted a charge with an 11-3 scoring spurt over the next 4:21 to get their deficit down to 35-25.

However, the Tigers finished the half by scoring eight of the final 10 points in the period in taking a 43-27 lead into the locker room. During the first 20 minutes Occidental nailed 17 of their 32 (53.1 percent) field goal attempts while holding the Beavers to an 8-for-26 (30.8 percent) shooting effort.

During the second half, a Michael Edwards lay-up with just over 16 minute remaining got Caltech within 49-35. The 14-point spread was as close as the visitors would get during the final stanza.

Occidental controlled the game underneath by posting a plus-29 rebounding (52-23) advantage in tallying the victory. Conrad Liebowitz grabbed a game high 13 rebounds to aid in the Tigers cause.

The Tigers duo of Deshun McCoy and Kris Montoya each score 19 points in recording game high honors. Ryan Chong and Liebowitz contributed 12 points each while Jack Hanley chipped in an 11-point effort.

Edwards took game high scoring honors for the ninth time this season with an-18 point performance. Andrew Hogue scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half in posting his career high during his first collegiate start.

Caltech continues SCIAC play on Saturday evening when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off against the Sagehens.
