PASADENA, CA – The Chapman men's basketball team used a late scoring run to post a 57-48 win over Caltech on Wednesday evening.
The first half saw four ties and four lead changes as both teams shot the ball effectively. Chapman nailed 12 of its 20 shots (60 percent) from the field while Caltech went 11-for-19 from the floor. The Beavers 57.9 shooting accuracy was their third best shooting half of the season. Caltech was lead by the duo of Bryan Joel (10 points) and Andrew Hogue (8) during the opening 20 minutes.
Neither team held a lead larger than nine points in the opening frame. With Caltech holding a 19-18 lead with 8:55 left until halftime, the visitors went on a scoring spurt. Chapman scored 12 of the game's next 14 points in grabbing a 30-21 lead with 3:05 left in the stanza. Caltech closed the gap by scoring five unanswered points to close the half as the visitors held a 30-27 lead going into the locker room.
The visitors started the second half by scoring the first six points of the half in grabbing a 36-27 advantage less than three minutes into the final frame. After the initial scoring spurt by Chapman, the game remained tight as both teams had trouble finding the bottom of the net the remainder of the half.
Chapman never trailed in the second half but Caltech kept the game close. The Beavers got within two points at 36-34 but Chapman responded. Caltech got their deficit to three points on three separate occasions the rest of the game but couldn't pull in front.
The visitors put the game away in the final two minutes. Already holding a 50-46 lead, the Panthers didn't miss a foul shot or field goal the rest of the game in sealing the win.
After both team shot the ball at a torrid pace to start the game, Chapman connected on just 33.3 percent (8-for-24) while the Beavers hit 32 percent (8-for-25) in the final frame.
Hogue's 14 points lead all scorers. The sophomore also grabbed a team high seven rebounds. Joel chipped in an 11-point effort as he scored in double figures for the ninth time this season.
Justin Young led all Panther scorers with a 13-point evening.
Caltech plays its final road game of the season on Saturday when they travel to Whittier for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
