PASADENA (July 9, 2019) – The Caltech men's basketball team, recently removed from its first 10-win season under Head Coach Dr. Oliver Eslinger and best overall season since 1953-54, has released its schedule for the 2019-20 season set to begin in November.
Caltech will open the season on Sunday, Nov. 10 when it hosts Yeshiva University at 3 p.m. The New York-based Maccabees will provide a stiff early season challenge for the Beavers after winning 16 games in the Skyline Conference last year. Caltech will next embark on a trip to the University of California, Santa Cruz for a two-game weekend tournament beginning on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Beavers will meet the Banana Slugs in the Saturday game before battling the University of Puget Sound on Sunday. Caltech will play its third consecutive away game on Saturday, Nov. 23, when it travels to Occidental College for the 110 Rivalry game. The Beavers will look to end a three-year drought against the Tigers in the annual rivalry contest. The men's basketball team will close November on Wednesday, Nov. 27 when they host Hamilton College at 5 p.m.
The Beavers will next look towards a quiet December that features just four games, all of which will take place in Pasadena. The first game will go down on Saturday, Dec. 14 when Caltech rematches UC Santa Cruz at 3 p.m. Caltech will next host a tough University of Chicago team on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 3 p.m., one that features former Caltech standout Bryan Joel '15 on its coaching staff. The Beavers will follow up on Thursday, Dec. 19 with Elmhurst College at 3 p.m. before closing out a quick December with Tufts University on Sunday, Dec. 29 at 4:30 p.m. The Jumbos are coming off a 12-win season, but will provide a necessary late winter litmus test for the Beavers playing out of a tough NESCAC conference.
From January onward, the men's basketball team will play all of its games exclusively in the SCIAC. Caltech will open its conference slate with a winnable game at the University of La Verne, which did not win a conference game last year, on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Beavers will next return home for a three-game homestand that will first feature a rematch with Oxy on Monday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. Caltech will play again two days later when it hosts Whittier College on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. The Beavers split with the Poets in 2019 and came up one point short in the road defeat, leaving the door open for potentially more success against them this season. Caltech will finish up the home series on Saturday, Jan. 11 when they host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 2 p.m. The men's basketball team will next travel to California Lutheran University on Wednesday, Jan. 15, then to the University of Redlands on the following Saturday. The Beavers will be back in Pasadena for one more home game in January when they host defending SCIAC regular season and postseason tournament champions Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. Caltech will wrap the month with two more games on the road, beginning with Chapman University on Saturday, Jan. 25 and ending with the conclusion to the Whittier series on Wednesday, Jan. 29.
The Beavers will open the final month of the season with the University of La Verne on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m, before hitting the road for a pair of contests against the Claremont schools. Caltech will first face CMS at Roberts Pavilion on Saturday, Feb. 8 before traveling to Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The Beavers will then play their final three home games of the season, starting with the University of Redlands on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. Caltech will rematch CLU on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. and finish the home slate on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Chapman in the annual Senior Day game at 2 p.m. The men's basketball team will hope to close the 2019-20 season in winning fashion when it plays at Oxy on Friday, Feb. 28.
The SCIAC Postseason Tournament is scheduled to begin on Friday, Feb. 28 for the conference's top four teams.
