West Regional list

Fencers must win at least 20 percent of a minimum total number of bouts in NCAA competition to qualify.

On the women’s side, the full épeé team of sophomore Christina Meyer (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Hackley School), junior Catherine Pavlov (Woodside, Calif. / Menlo School) and sophomore Constance Robinson (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) is eligible to represent Caltech, although Pavlov will not compete due to other commitments.  Meyer is the third-rated fencer in the field after winning 15 bouts this year, including knocking off a top-12 NCAA Championships finisher.  Robinson won six NCAA bouts, one of which came against an ‘A’-rated foe.

Senior Katie Fisher (Chapel Hill, N.C. / East Chapel Hill) will be the Beavers’ only representative in the foil after racking up a team-high 20 wins, eight of which were against West region opponents.

In the saber, junior Shi En Kim (Malaysia / Anderson J.C.) and Sonia Kim will compete in a deep field including eight rated opponents having won 11 and six bouts this season, respectively.

As for the men, Caltech’s top-rated fencers, freshmen Ethan Lo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) and Spencer Strumwasser, will represent in the épeé, which is loaded with top fencers, including seven ‘A’ ratings.  Lo led all Beavers with 21 wins in NCAA competition, including a bout over a top-4 fencer in the NCAA and four against ‘A’-rated fencers, three of which he will face again at Regionals.  Strumwasser was right behind Lo with 20 wins on the season, with a team-best six coming against ‘A’-rated opponents.

The entire foil team is also set to make the trip, led by ‘C’-rated sophomore Matthew Jin (Fremont, Calif. / Mission San Jose) along with junior Anup Kishore (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Alex Lew in the deepest field of the competition.  Jin picked up 19 wins this winter, while Kishore posted nine and Lew won five.

Head Coach Carla Corbit and the Beavers will take on Stanford University, the United States Air Force Academy and UCSD this Saturday, Mar. 7.  Live results will be posted at the link provided next to the event on each team’s schedule page.
