PASADENA (Mar. 7, 2018) – A field featuring the most entrants the NCAA West Region has had in recent memory will compete at the Caltech-hosted regional championships this Saturday.
The host Beavers will have seven fencers competing, six of which are on the men's side, with four coming from the epee team, fresh off a perfect IFCSC season in which the Beavers won the men's epee championship. The Beavers also notched their 100th team victory under Head Coach Carla Corbit since she took over the program in 2011-12.
Men's epee competitors will include senior Ethan Lo (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto), senior Spencer Strumwasser (Carlsbad, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy), junior Qifan Wang (Surrey, Canada / Semiahmoo Secondary) and freshman Zimo Zhu (Buffalo Grove, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson), while freshman Andrew Chan (Denver, Col. / Littleton) represents men's foil. Junior Aaron Shih (Santa Monica, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) made the field as the Beavers' lone representative at men's sabre.
Freshman Laura Hu (Bellevue, Wash. / Newport) will make her debut at the regional championships when she participates in women's epee. The two finalists for each weapon on the men's and women's side will qualify for the national tournament set to be held at Penn State University on Mar. 22-25.
The regional championships are set to get underway on Saturday, Mar. 10 at 9 a.m. in the Braun Athletic Center.
