PASADENA, CA – The Whittier men's soccer team fought off a feisty Caltech effort in posting a 4-1 win on Wednesday afternoon. It was Caltech's SCIAC home opener.
Whittier pressed their offense early but the Beavers' steady play along the back line kept the score 0-0 until the 18th minute. Francis Maxwell broke the dead lock when he headed home a free kick from a Brian Russell pass. The Poets made the score 2-0 with under five minutes left until halftime on an Ian Cromwell goal.
The early minutes of the second half saw the Poets continue to register shots but they couldn't find the back of the net. Caltech made the game close when Alec Sands scored a goal in his second straight game. The sophomore found the back of net when he scored on a shot from an extreme angle from 30 yards out in the 77th minute.
The visitors responded by scoring less than two minutes later when James Suri scored on a header from a cross off of Dylan Fortin's foot. Maxwell rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 90th minute.
Caltech goalie J.D. Feist had the best game of his young collegiate career by saving 10 shots.
The Beavers take the next week off before returning to the field when they travel to Pomona-Pitzer on Sept. 18.
