CLAREMONT, Calif. (Sept. 16, 2015) – Junior Alec Sands (Longwood, Fla. / Trinity Preparatory School) netted his first goal in over two years as the Caltech men's soccer team dropped a SCIAC matchup at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 6-1, on Wednesday night.
The Beavers dip to 0-3 overall while the Stags improve to 1-3-1 (1-2-0).
The Caltech defense limited CMS to a season-low 13 shots on goal, including holding them scoreless over the opening 35 minutes of the game and surrendering just three goals from open play. A free kick and penalty within a three-minute span quickly handed CMS a 2-0 lead, which became 3-0 just 30 seconds before halftime on a corner kick.
The Stags tacked on a fourth goal six minutes out of the break but Caltech responded with a strike from Sands just one minute later. After the final two CMS goals in the 62nd and 69th minutes, the defense locked back down to keep the hosts off the board in the final 20 minutes.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will host the University of Redlands (3-2, 1-2) on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. Please note that this is a change from the original 11 a.m. start time.
