PASADENA (Oct. 7, 2017) – Freshman goalkeeper Joe Como (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) had a stellar day in net to keep the Caltech men's soccer team within striking distance of Chapman University (6-2-1 SCIAC) in Saturday's SCIAC clash.
Como, with a stingy Beavers defense in front of him, held the Panthers scoreless for the game's first 55-minutes before the visitors connected on a perfectly timed header. The freshman closed the game having saved 12 of 14 shots on goal. Como's resiliance had especially paid off by the 77th minute when a Chapman midfielder received his second yellow card seven minutes from his first card of the game, creating a man advantage for the Beavers over the final 13 minutes of the game. The two goal deficit proved too steep for the Beavers to make up, however Como's 83-percent save percentage is a major positive for the team going forward. Sophomore Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) led the Beavers with three shots and freshman Gianfranco de Castro (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) also had one shot on goal.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will have five more chances to notch their first SCIAC victory since 2011 this season. Their next opportunity will come on Wednesday, Oct. 11 when they host the team they knocked off in 2011, California Lutheran University at 4 p.m.
