PASADENA (Oct. 8, 2018) – Junior captain Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) led a Caltech offensive outburst for the men's soccer team, and helped the Beavers defeat Providence Christian College, 6-0, on Monday. The six-goal differential marks the team's largest margin of victory in 21 years.
Yu stuffed the stat sheet with three goals, three assists and six shots on goal, instantly becoming the Beavers' leading scorer in 2018. The nine points are the most single-game points for a Caltech men's soccer player in recorded history. The junior got the home team on the board in the 20th minute when he stole the ball off a poor clear and took the ball all the way to the net. Yu went on to score twice more, and nearly came away with four goals had it not been for a stellar diving save from the Providence Christian goalkeeper on a second-half penalty kick.
Senior midfielder Rafael Fueyo-Gomez (Houston, Texas / St. Thomas' Episcopal) benefitted greatly from Yu's strong game. Fueyo-Gomez scored twice himself with the first goal coming off a rebound as a result of a Yu free kick from the top of the box. His second goal, the last of the game, also came off Yu's foot initially as the senior managed to bury the ball from short range as a result. Sophomore Gianfranco de Castro (Weston, Fla. / Cypress Bay) scored his second goal of the season thanks to another assist from Yu, who initiated the play with a steal and found de Castro on a through-ball to the right side of the field. Sophomore JD Walker Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc) and junior Robin Henry (Sprimont, Belgium / University of Edinburgh) each assisted on Yu's other two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Joe Como (Glen Cove, N.Y. / Friends Acad.) made five big saves to earn his second clean sheet of the season.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will return to SCIAC play on Wednesday, Oct. 10 against California Lutheran University.
