PASADENA (June 25, 2019) – The Caltech men's soccer team has released its schedule for the upcoming 2019 season. The Beavers will look to build off momentum stemming from last season's SCIAC win, the first since 2011.
Caltech is set to open the season with a two-game homestand, starting with San Diego Christian College on Monday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m., followed by a Saturday contest with Providence Christian College on Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. Caltech scored six goals when the Sea Beggars made the cross-town trip last October, and will be looking for another strong start to the season.
The Beavers will then hit the road on a trip to the Pacific Northwest, beginning on Friday, Sept. 13 at Willamette University and ending the following Sunday at Northwest University in Kirkland, Wash. Caltech will remain on the road for one more game when it opens up SCIAC play against the same team they closed with in 2018, Whittier College, on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The men's soccer team will end September with back-to-back home games against California Lutheran University on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges one week later, also at 11 a.m.
The rest of the season will feature the men's soccer team exclusively against SCIAC teams. Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will open October at home against the University of La Verne on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. Caltech will next hit the road the following Saturday when it takes on the University of Redlands before returning home to face Occidental College at 4 p.m on Wednesday, Oct. 9. The Beavers will have two more home games on the docket on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Wednesday, Oct. 16 when they face Chapman University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, completing the first loop of SCIAC games.
The first of the Beavers' final four SCIAC games will happen at home on Saturday, Oct. 19 against Redlands at 11 a.m. Caltech will next travel to La Verne on Wednesday, Oct. 23, then host the Sagehens in the final home game of the year on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 11 a.m. in the annual Senior Day game. The men's soccer team will end the 2019 season on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they travel to Claremont to meet the Stags. If the Beavers manage to qualify, the SCIAC Postseason Tournament will begin on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
In addition to last year's SCIAC victory in the season finale at Whittier, the men's soccer team accrued a series of individual accolades. Junior Theo Yang (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach) earned the prestigious distinction of Academic All-District, while classmate Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) was named All-SCIAC a second year in a row and freshman midfielder Samir Johnson (Portland, Ore. / Jesuit) the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year.
