PASADENA (Oct. 9, 2019) – The Caltech men's soccer team rebounded from a tough loss over the weekend and outplayed visiting Occidental College for extended moments during Wednesday evening's SCIAC game.
The Beavers refused to back down early, and hung two exceptional chances on the Tigers within the game's first 15 minutes. The first came off the head of freshman defender Josh Finnerty (Walled Lake, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) in the eighth minute of the first half. Finnerty sent a solid header wide right off a free kick from senior midfielder Theo Yang (Columbia, Md. / Long Reach). Three minutes later, the Beavers thought to have the Tigers beat on a run down the left side, but were promptly called offsides as the ball crossed the white line.
Caltech also threatened Occidental with its speed down the wings. Senior Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) and junior Rohan Mirchandani (Pleasanton, Calif. / Foothill) each had moments against Oxy defenders and came inches away from connecting the finishing pass on numerous occasions. Senior goalkeeper Richard Shim (New York, N.Y. / Phillips Acad.) made his return to the lineup and made four saves, including one particularly athletic stop in the 39th-minute just before Oxy got on the board for the first time.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will take to the road for their next game on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Chapman University.
