LA VERNE, Calif. (Oct. 23, 2019) – The Caltech men's soccer team drew its first tie in five years at the University of La Verne on Wednesday, making it two straight games of registering points against SCIAC competition. The Beavers' previously most recent tie came against Chapman University in 2014.
Reigning SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week Max Popken (Westport, Conn. / Staples) kept the visitors in the game with a clean sheet to go along with 10 saves while the player in front of him threatened the Leopards at various points in the game. Senior Kevin Yu (Park Ridge, N.J. / Park Ridge) and sophomore Velissarios Christodolou (Athens, Greece / Athens College) led Caltech with a pair of shots on goal, with Yu also firing a shot just to the right of the net in the first overtime period. Despite being outnumbered by the host Leopards, the Beavers appeared to be fresh for the extra periods where they outshot the home team 3-2.
The tie gives the Beavers three SCIAC points on the season, thus far a one-point improvement on the previous year while marking the first time the program has surpassed two points in a season since 2007 when it finished with three. With two games to go in the regular season, Caltech will have a chance to catch Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in the standings, a team they beat just last week depending on the result of this weekend's game and how the Sagehens finish the season.
Head Coach Phil Murray and the Beavers will play their final home game of the 2019 season this Saturday, Oct. 26 when they host the Sagehens at 11 a.m.
