REDLANDS, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2016) – Rookie Thomas Gallup (Houston, Texas / Phillips Exeter Acad.) set a new program record in his Caltech men's swimming & diving debut at the University of Redlands on Saturday.
Gallup was one of three Beavers to claim first place in an individual event at the meet, swimming a 58.92 to beat the record set by sophomore Adam Dai (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Dos Pueblos) last year by more than 1.5 seconds.
The meet began with a statement win for Caltech in the 200 Medley Relay. Gallup, classmate Alex Moraru (Southlake, Texas / Carroll Senior) and sophomores Dylan Lu (Kingwood, Texas / Kingwood) and Jonathan Willett (Edina, Minn. / Edina) swam clocked the third-fastest time in program history to beat out the Bulldogs by .42, thanks to brilliant breaststroke and freestyle splits by Gallup and Willett, respectively. The Beavers 'B' relay claimed third place to stake the visitors to a 13-4 lead.
Redlands quickly made up the margin with a 14-5 edge in the 1000 Free and began to build a significant lead with first-place finishes in the next four events. Willett finally broke up the momentum with a dominant victory in the 100 Free and Lu followed with a win of his own in the 100 Back. The Beavers rounded out the individual events with their highest point total of the day thanks to a 1-3-5 finish by Gallup, Dai and junior Alexander Bourzutschky (Potomac, Md. / Montgomery Blair).
Head Coach Paul Hughes and the Beavers have one more meet on the fall schedule; the team will head to Chapman University on Saturday, Nov. 19.
