SKILLMAN, N.J. (Oct. 30, 2014) – The Caltech men's tennis team has been ranked No. 13 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) West Region Preseason Poll.
The Beavers came in just four spots below UC-Santa Cruz, which ranked No. 23 in the nation, to hold their season-ending ranking from last year after posting six wins – the most in a season since 2006 – and breaking a 45-match losing streak in the SCIAC dating back to 2009 with a 7-2 win over Occidental College in the SCIAC Championship.
"I'm very excited to enter this year in the same position we finished last season," Head Coach Mandy Gamble said. "I think it gives us a good footing heading into the year, rather than fighting just to get back to this point. We bring back most of our starters, and there will be opportunities at the back end for players to step into the lineup."
Caltech returns four of its six regular singles players from last year, including its #1 doubles tandem in the Pathireddy twins, Ruthwick and Sathwick (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney). Sathwick beat the previous program record for wins in a single season with 11, but classmate Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) outpaced him by one at #5 singles to set the mark at 12 wins. The squad also returns junior Rushikesh Joshi (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty), who held down the #4 spot, but will miss his brother, four-year #1 singles starter Devashish, who has since graduated along with #6 singles player Luka Mernick.
