Lebby Clinches in 7-2 Men's Tennis Win Over Principia

PASADENA, Calif. (Mar. 10, 2015) – Sophomore Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach)  earned the match-clinching point as one of three double-winners for the Caltech men's tennis team in a 7-2 win over Principia College on Tuesday afternoon.

Caltech improves to 3-4 heading into a two-week respite preceding Spring Break, while Principia is now 1-3. 

Sophomores Ruthwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) and Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) looked dominant to start doubles play at #1, surging ahead 5-0 before closing it out 8-4 for their fifth win of the season.  At #2, junior Rushikesh Joshi (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty) and Lebby overcame some early struggles to post an identical victory, while juniors Alexander Henny (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) and Ishan Mehta (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) picked up the only break of a tight match at #3 in the final game to win 8-6.

Following the doubles sweep, the Beavers kept going strong and soon clinched the match as Henny blazed through court #5, 6-3, 6-1, and Lebby followed immediately afterward with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at #4.

Lipel pulled out a thrilling win at #6 singles for the first of his collegiate career, rallying from a 6-4 defeat in the first set to take the second, 6-1, and blank his opponent in the superbreaker, 10-0.  Sathwick Pathireddy recorded the beavers' final victory on his fifth chance at match point at #3, winning 6-4, 6-4.  Joshi and Ruthwick Pathireddy were each on the short end of razor-thin margins at #2 and #1, respectively, as Josh hung in right to the end, falling 7-5. 6-4, while Pathireddy came within one game of taking the match in straight sets, but his opponent rallied to win the final three in the second set and take the superbreaker, 1-6, 7-5, 10-7.

Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the courts on Sunday, Mar. 22 when they host Pacific Lutheran University (2-5) at 10:00 a.m.
