PASADENA, Calif. (May 2, 2015) – Sophomore Morgan Lebby (Laguna Beach, Calif. / Laguna Beach) notched wins at both #2 doubles and #4 singles as the Caltech men's tennis team capped its 2015 season with a close defeat to Occidental College in the SCIAC Championships on Saturday.
The rivals battled all the way to the penultimate match as #5 and 6 singles were left standing with Oxy leading 4-3. Doubles set the tone as Oxy went up by a break at all three courts early but were quickly broken back at #1 and 2. The Tigers' held on for the first point at #3 (8-4), but junior Rushikesh Joshi (Sunnyvale, Calif. / Archbishop Mitty) and Lebby matched soon after, 8-4. Oxy's #1 pairing picked up a break on the Beavers' serve in the final game to win, 8-6, and hold the 2-1 advantage heading to singles.
The Tigers pulled within one point of clinching with fast wins from the region's No. 11-ranked Josh Dancu at #1 and #2 singles, but Caltech responded with victories in tight battles by sophomore Sathwick Pathireddy (Irvine, Calif. / Whitney) at #3 (7-5, 6-2) and Lebby at #4 (7-6 , 6-4). Oxy would clinch with a 6-1, 6-1 breeze at #5, although junior Alexander Henny (Scarborough, Maine / Scarborough) capped the day with a 7-5, 6-0 win at #6.
Several Beavers wrote their names in the record books this year, with the twins, Sathwick and Ruthwick Pathireddy, setting a new single-season mark for doubles wins as a pairing (11) and shattering the career record with their 19th. Lebby and Sathwick Pathireddy won their 20th and 18th career singles matches, respectively, to rank fifth and sixth on the all-time list, while Joshi/Lebby also surpassed the previous career doubles record of 14, winning their 16th career match.
