PASADENA (Dec. 14, 2017) – The Caltech men's tennis team has released its schedule for the 2018 season, which will include eight home matches, eight away matches and one on neutral site in addition to the 118th annual Ojai Valley Tournament in late April. The Beavers participated at the ITA Regional Tournament back in October.
Caltech opens the season at home against Pomona-Pitzer Colleges on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. The Sagehens finished last season third in the SCIAC and 12th in the nation and project to be strong again in spite of losing five starting seniors. The Beavers will then have one week to regroup before they begin a northwest road swing against Lewis & Clark Colleges, Linfield College and George Fox University on Feb. 17, 18 and 19. Following the road trip, the team returns home on Sunday, Mar. 4 to host No. 29 University of Mary Washington followed by Christopher Newport University the next day at 3 p.m. before returning to action the following Sunday to meet Vassar College in Indian Wells for a 10 a.m. match.
The Beavers are then scheduled to hit the road once again, this time for a two-match stint in Texas when they take on No. 23 University of Texas at Tyler followed by Austin College on Mar. 18 and 19th. Caltech will then return to California to meet the University of Redlands on the road, a team that finished second in the West Region a year ago and 11th in the nation. A three-match home stint follows the Redlands match, as the Beavers will first meet Whitworth College on Mar. 27 at 2 p.m., followed by Pacific Lutheran University at 2 p.m. then by SCIAC foe Chapman University at 10 a.m. on Mar. 31.
Heading into April, the Beavers finish the season exclusively with SCIAC matches. The men's team will first play a 3 p.m. match at Whittier College on Friday, Apr. 6 before meeting Occidental College in Eagle Rock one week to the day also at 3 p.m. Caltech's final two matches of the year will be against SCIAC foes California Lutheran University on Apr. 20 at 3 p.m. and No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 10 a.m., which should prove to be a solid litmus test to see how the team has grown.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers return to Ventura for the 118th Annual Ojai Valley Tournament from Friday, Apr. 26-Sunday, Apr. 28 before the SCIAC Championships the following weekend, hosted by the conference's top two seeds upon the season's completion.
