PASADENA (Mar. 4, 2018) – Freshman James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) had a hand in both of the Caltech men's tennis team's wins against visiting No. 16 Mary Washington University on Sunday afternoon.
Wei started the day on the right foot when he teamed with fellow freshman Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) at first doubles. The duo knocked off Mary Washington's top doubles team, ranked 35th in the nation, 8-6, for their second win of the year and one that will be sure to give the combo some future consideration in the ITA Division III doubles rankings. Wei would then go on to pull out a tough first set against his opponent at third singles when he won a 7-5 tiebreaker before dominating in the second set, 6-1. The freshman is now 4-1 in what has been a remarkable individual start to the 2018 season. Shanker, meanwhile saw similar results in the first set against the 49th-ranked singles player in Division III but ultimately came out on the short end of things.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers will return to the court on the very next day against visiting No. 30 Christopher Newport University.
