PASADENA (Apr. 3, 2018) – Freshman men's tennis player Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow), along with fellow freshman James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) have made appearances in the latest edition of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional Rankings, in which the Beavers came in ranked ninth out of 20 teams.
Shanker debuted in the men's singles rankings at 18th in addition to 11th in the doubles rankings in tandem with doubles partner Wei. Following in the footsteps of departed senior Ruthwick Pathireddy, Shanker and Wei have picked up the slack for Caltech with a a combined 17-5 record mostly played out of the first and second singles slots (though Shanker has gone 8-4 playing all his matches at first singles). The duo have been every bit as dangerous at first doubles, most recently completing an undefeated March while compiling a 9-3 record thus far in 2018, which includes two national victories and one conference win.
Head Coach Mandy Gamble and the Beavers are in preparation for Friday's 3 p.m. match at Whittier College.
