PASADENA (June 13, 2018) – All-American doubles team Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) added one more accomplishment to their stacked rookie resume when they became the first Caltech doubles team to finish among the nation's top-25 pairings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III rankings.
The rookie duo came in ranked 12th in the nation, one of just two SCIAC doubles teams to appear in the rankings. Their regional standing also reached new heights, coming in ranked fourth among 15 teams in the West. Both players left their mark in the singles rankings as well with Shanker finishing his rookie year the 12th-ranked player in the region with Wei coming in ranked 16th out of 25 players. Last month, Shanker and Wei cemented their strong season, winning a match as the program's first representatives at the NCAA Championships.
