Men's Doubles to Play for Third-Place at Nationals

ROME, Ga. (Oct. 12, 2018) – Sophomore doubles team Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) came a decisive super tiebreaker away from reaching the finals of the 2018 ITA Cup on Friday afternoon.

The sophomore Beavers started strong by taking a 6-4 first set over the top doubles team from Bowdoin College. Bowdoin, however, fought back with a 6-3 second set to set up a 10-point super tiebreaker to decide the match. The Polar Bears had a strong start of their own in the tiebreaker, using strong serving to take the match out of the Beavers hands. Unable to get out of the gate, Shanker and Wei came up short in a tiebreaker for the first time since the start of the 2018 ITA fall season.

For making the semifinals, Shanker and Wei will take on Whaling and Johnson from Gustavus Adolphus College in Saturday's third-place game, set for 1 p.m., ET.
