PASADENA (Mar. 26, 2019) – Sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) of the 29th-ranked Caltech men's tennis team pulled through with a massive come-from-behind ranked victory over visiting Colby College on Tuesday afternoon.
Shanker has consistently built his singles resume over the first 11 matches of the year with key wins and Tuesday was no exception. The sophomore earned win over his fifth ranked opponent of the season when he knotted things up with a 6-4 second set, then rallied after falling behind 4-1 in the third set to force a tiebreaker where he ultimately pulled through after some dramatic back-and-forth action. The Beavers took home a collective five singles wins, with sophomore Kevin Yu (Mason, Ohio / Cincinnati Country Day) also coming through with a come-from-behind three-set thriller.
Caltech began the day with a 2-1 doubles lead over Head Coach Jason Cohen's former team, though it did not come easily. Freshman Patryk Kozlowski (Irvine, Calif. / University High) and junior Connor Soohoo (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Crystal Springs) picked up the 8-6 win at second doubles while Yu and freshman Matthew Gonzalgo (Plantation, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) matched them with an 8-6 nod at third doubles after going down a break early in the set.
Cohen and the Beavers will have a quick turnaround when they face off with No. 28 George Fox on Wednesday, Mar. 27 at 10 a.m.
