LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. (May 2, 2019) – Sophomores Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) and James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) of the 22nd-ranked Caltech men's tennis team have become the first pair of Caltech tennis players to earn First Team All-SCIAC honors in program history.
Shanker, the region's second-ranked singles player, returns to First Team distinction after having one of the most prolific singles seasons in Caltech history. The sophomore earned victories over No. 3 Jed Kronenberg of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and No. 4 Chad LeDuff of the University of California, Santa Cruz, and most recently advanced to the semifinals of the 119th Ojai Tournament this past weekend, becoming the first men's player to advance past the quarterfinals. Shanker now holds a share of the program record for single-season victories with 15, after Wei set the record last year. Wei, meanwhile matched his win total from 2018 and found a spot on the First Team for the first time in his career after being named to Second Team as a freshman. As a unit, the duo is currently ranked fourth in the region and came one win away from matching last season's record-breaking regular season win total.
Head Coach Jason Cohen and the Beavers will travel to Claremont to face SCIAC regular season champion and Division III No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament on Friday, May 3 at 3 p.m.
