KALAMAZOO, Mich. (May 8, 2019) – Sophomore Varun Shanker (Midland, Mich. / Midland Dow) of the Caltech men's tennis team will return to the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships later this month, this time as a singles player. Shanker, along with doubles partner James Wei (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) represented Caltech at last year's individual championships.
Shanker is the second-ranked player in the west region, and has put together perhaps the greatest inidividual season in the history of the men's program. The sophomore is an eye-popping 6-1 against nationally-ranked foes and played a significant role in the Beavers earning their highest-ranked win as a team over then-No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges back in April. His 15 regular season wins tied the Caltech record set last year courtesy of teammate Wei.
The individual championships are scheduled for May 24-26, both at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan and hosted by Kalamazoo College. The draw for the individual championship will be done by the men's tennis committee and are set to be released on the afternoon of May 23.
